American Idol’s Kat Mcphee to Play Pregnant Hippie in New Film
June 4, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
The beauteous Katherine McPhee is having a busy year with the release of her self-titled debut album and her inclusion in her first independent feature film. It was earlier reported that the 23-year old runner-up on season five of American Idol will be part of the movie, The Last Caller, in which McPhee plays a self-obsessed and down on her luck woman who is searching for love. The Last Caller is scheduled to commence filming in New York this fall, under the collaborative efforts of Hilary Shor of Hit and Rub Productions and Nicholas Cokas (McPhee’s boyfriend) of Zenith Film Group.
More recently, Katherine McPhee has also joined the cast of a new comedy from Columbia Pictures and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison productions. In the still untitled movie, McPhee will portray the part of a pregnant hippie student who also happens to be a member of the saddest, sorriest, most pathetic sorority on campus. The film, which begins production on July 23, revolves around an ex-Playboy bunny who gets booted out of her quarters at the Playboy mansion and is forced to become house mother to the geekiest campus sorority.
Anna Faris, a veteran of all four Scary Movies, plays the newly evicted former Playboy bunny in a cast that also includes Rumer Willis (daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis), Dana Goodman (Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo) and Kat Dennings (The 40 Year Old Virgin).
Prior to her two upcoming movie projects, Katherine McPhee’s big screen exposure had previously been limited to a brief appearance in the 2006 biopic, Crazy, based on the life of Hank Garland, a legendary guitar player who rose to fame in Nashville in the 1950s. The American Idol alum also did a cameo on the ABC series, Ugly Betty, as well as theatrical turns on Annie Get Your Gun, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and You Are Here.

Baldness: a Hair-raising Problem
May 14, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
Bothered by baldness? There’s an organization for you! It’s called the Bald Headed Men of America and it’s open to “qualified” persons who have lost their hair.
Founded in 1974 by John T. Capps III, this special club is based in North Carolina and boasts of over 200,000 members. Club members believe “the best cure for bald headed men is to laugh about it, promote it, flaunt it, and remind others that the Lord made millions and millions of heads and those He didn’t like, He covered up.”
A lot of bald headed people appear to be taking that advice pretty well. In Hollywood, for instance, celebrities like Sean Connery, Patrick Stewart, and Bruce Willis ooze with sex appeal and continue to make blockbuster movies in spite of their lost hair.
For most people, however, baldness is a hair-raising problem that currently affects 40 million men and 20 million women in the United States alone. Few are prepared to part with their crowning glory and that has made anti-baldness schemes a $1 billion-a-year industry. The reason for this thriving industry is simple. A US study says men feel less attractive when they start losing hair. Bald people are generally seen as less alluring and look older than they really are which explains why people will do anything to hold onto their hair.
The sudden loss of hair can be very distressing since some men associate a full head of hair with virility and youth. So if their hairline recedes, they may feel robbed of their youth and masculinity.
The importance of hair was evident even in Biblical times where it was considered the seat of a person’s physical and moral strength. In Judges 16:17, Samson told Delilah that his strength came from his hair and “if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I will become weak.”
In Second Samuel 14:25-26, Absalom was praised for his beauty, especially his fair complexion and thick hair. Whenever he cut his hair every year, it weighed 200 shekels or as heavy as the king himself.
Famous saints associated with hair are Martin de Porres, a favorite of Italian hairdressers, and the twin brothers Cosmas and Damian. These examples show that hair was valued more than any other part of the body.
That same concern can be seen today. Many people spend hours cleaning, cutting, styling and “nourishing” their hair with various substances - all in an attempt to preserve it and make it attractive. What they don’t know is that hair is a dead structure and most of what is applied to it has little or no effect at all.
Hair is made of keratin, a protein found in nails and the outer layer of the skin. The part that rises out of the skin is called the hair shaft. The average head normally contains about 100,000 hairs, with brunettes having as much as 155,000 hairs and redheads, 85,000 hairs.
The living part of the hair is the hair root which is found beneath the skin. This is the part that grows and pushes the dead hair shaft out of the skin. Surrounding each hair root is the hair follicle. The number of hair follicles is determined before birth and this, in turn, determines the number of hairs a person will have. The two types of hair are terminal, meaning very long, thick and easily visible hair; and vellus or tiny, fine, almost unnoticeable hair.
Each hair follicle undergoes repeated cycles of active growth and rest. The three stages in the follicular cycle are the anagen or growth phase, the catagen or transition phase, and the telogen or resting phase during which hair is shed.
On a normal adult scalp, 80 – 95 percent of hair follicles are in the anagen phase while the remainder is in the telogen phase. The catagen phase which runs for 3 - 4 weeks affects less than one percent of hair.
When hair falls off faster than it is replaced, that’s when baldness begins. This can either be temporary or permanent. In any case, baldness can make you less attractive and older than you really are. That’s why it’s important to care for your hair. To complement your hair, don’t forget to care for your face too. You can do this with the help of Dermaxin, a popular skin cream that contains special ingredients to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by as much as 45 percent. Dermaxin repairs and rejuvenates the skin so you’ll look young, fresh, and wrinkle-free! It’s your best defense against the signs of aging. Check out http://www.dermaxin.com for more information.

Turks and Caicos Islands: the Caribbean’s Secret Beach Paradise
May 8, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
One of the Caribbean’s best-kept secret holiday destinations, the Turks and Caicos Islands are ringed by white-sand beaches and set like jewels amid warm turquoise waters.
Located at the southeastern tip of the Bahamas, 575 miles south east of Miami, Florida, the Turks and Caicos Islands are a vacation paradise famous for their stunning water color, endless wide beaches, world-renowned snorkeling and scuba diving, humpback whale migration, deep-sea and bone fishing, as well as, all types of water sports, golf, shopping and cultural activities.
Fishing & Diving
The Turks and Caicos Islands are fortunate in having some of the only unspoiled reefs left in the Caribbean. With 1,000 square miles of coral reef, the Islands are well-known among scuba divers for spectacular wall dives, turtles, manta rays, humpback whales and the oldest known shipwreck in the western hemisphere.
The Turks and Caicos Islands are a year round bonefish heaven and deep-sea big-game fishing is awesome as well.
Beaches
For those visitors that are not fishing or diving enthusiasts, you can look forward to wondrous, lazy days of sun, sea and sand.
The Turks and Caicos Islands boast some of the most exquisite beaches in the entire Caribbean. Grace Bay Beach on Provo where courting couples find the perfect setting for a wedding is a 12-mile-long stunner voted best beach in the world on two occasions by readers of Conde Nast Traveler.
Best of all is that you can find many deserted beaches, small secluded coves and bays, which provide sheltered areas to swim, snorkel, sail and explore without the crowds except a pelican or two!
The rich and famous have known this for years with a long list of celebrities slipping away to the secluded shores of the Turks and Caicos for endless days of quiet relaxation.
Bruce Willis and Keith Richards have homes here and Justin Timberlake, Penelope Cruz, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Roberts, Michael Douglas and many others have visited.
Accommodations
Whether you’re a young single, a couple or parents with kids you’re sure to find accommodations to suit your tastes and needs.
The Turks and Caicos Islands offer choices ranging from quaint inns to small boutique resorts, a few larger hotels with all inclusive options and luxury resorts with fantastic spas considered some of the best anywhere in the world. Renting a condo or a villa is also a popular option.
Many Islands To Explore
Providenciales is the most populated island with most of the hotels and tourist facilities, but Parrot Cay, Pine Cay, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Salt Cay and Grand Turk are particularly alluring for those looking to get off the beaten path. On these islands you’ll find tiny towns, small personable hotels and pristine solitude.
Cockburn Town on Grand Turk is the Island’s capital with a truly fascinating, one-of-a-kind museum. Cliffs and ancient caves await your exploration on Middle Caicos and you can watch the annual humpback whale migration right from the beach on Salt Cay.
Quick Facts
The Turks and Caicos are officially English speaking with a population close to 30,000 people made up of both “Belongers” (citizens) and expatriates. Most live on the main tourist hub of Providenciales or “Provo” as it’s commonly called. The official currency is the US dollar and major credit cards are accepted, as well as, travelers checks.
Traveling to the Turks and Caicos is typically more expensive than developed tourist destinations like Cancun or Nassau, Bahamas, but then that’s typical of most Caribbean islands. However, the Turks and Caicos Islands are much less crowded and developed (for now) then most other Caribbean islands.
Known internationally as a leading tax haven and financial center for investments and business, tourism is still in the early stages. However, recent development trends are fueling fast growth in the Turks and Caicos economy and real estate market where condos and vacation homes are experiencing rapid appreciation.
Travel & Transportation
Direct flights from New York, Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami make traveling from the United States easy, and allow visitors to be relaxing on the beach within a few short hours.
All US Citizens traveling by air to the Turks and Caicos Islands must have a valid US passport. Canadians can enter with a birth certificate and photo id.
Transportation is readily available through local agencies and major car rental companies at the airport and around town. It’s best to book your rental well in advance especially if visiting during the peak winter season. Many resorts offer shuttle service from the airport. Taxis and small buses also serve the island.
Start Planning
The Turks and Caicos Islands are truly magnificent. If you want to get away from it all, you’ll certainly enjoy lounging on the beautiful white sand beaches.
For more adventure, the numerous national parks, nature preserves, sanctuaries and historical sites give you plenty of options for interesting excursions. Of course, the bone fishing, big-game fishing and scuba diving will have you coming back for more.
Plenty of inns, hotels and resorts are available perfect for young singles, couples or parents with kids. If you’d like to visit a Caribbean island that isn’t crowded or over-developed then the Turks and Caicos are your best bet.

Matchbox Jeep
March 17, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
Being an only child has its benefits. I always remember Christmas being a particularly good time of year with lots of presents and no-one pestering me to play with them. Without doubt, the most coveted moment in my childhood was unwrapping a brand new, shiny toy car. Quite how pushing a lump of metal around the floor for hours on end kept me amused I’m unsure, but the road tax was a damn sight cheaper I know that much. Well I long for those heydays again and Jeep may have come up with the answer.
The Jeep Patriot is essentially a mini Jeep, a matchbox toy version of the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. It’s Jeep’s aim to entice as many families into the Patriot as possible and are marketing it as a sensible, affordable alternative to the family saloon.
A few things are instantly obvious. Despite the ‘mini’ (and I mean mini compared to a Boeing 747) proportions, the baby Jeep is still most definitely from the same family as its bigger brothers. The seven slot front grill and round headlights are as synonymous with Jeep as the contoured nose on an Aston Martin. The styling combines on road aggression with off road tradition, although the front does sit quite low to the ground meaning any serious off road action could be a problem.
Switchable four wheel drive is included which is de rigueur for any wannabe off road contender. There’s also room for all the family (handy as this is the target demographic) with plenty of boot space and a washable interior allowing for even the messiest weekend outings to be enjoyed without a large valeting bill upon your return.
A pretty economical 2 litre diesel engine is found under the bonnet of the ‘diesel sport’ derivative and makes a fair fist of things when out on the road. In fact an average run will return roughly 42mpg; a statistic you don’t need Einstein to decipher, to know that for an off-road vehicle it’s exceptional. Of course the flipside of this economy means the low rev range isn’t the punchiest and you need to use the full rev range to make any sort of rapid progress, but you won’t have the look of horror as your fuel gauge drops before your eyes. The six speed gearbox doesn’t let the side down either and allows the Patriot to make the best use of those revs you’ll be chasing.
The car’s height is also more adolescent than adult and this stunted height allows the Patriot to tackle corners far more effectively than other 4 x 4 compatriots. The smaller proportions don’t just help eliminate body roll though, the handling is responsive and has a nimble feel that has you forgetting what type of vehicle you’re driving.
The interior is perhaps the one aspect that has had reviewers reaching for their red pens, but I don’t agree. Admittedly the build quality isn’t going to compete with the Germans, let alone the flair of the Italians but we’re missing the point. As touched upon earlier, the Jeep can take anything a family can throw at it and stay pristine. Throw mud, Ribena and Ice-cream on the dashboard (disclaimer: no responsibility taken from this author should you do so) and it’ll wipe clean in seconds.
This 4x 4 is the antithesis of Italian flair, the Bruce Willis of the metro sexual world we live in. The front is square, the back is square - even the wheel arches are somehow square. In fact with the exception of the wheels and the headlights that must’ve crept through the conveyor belt at the assembly plant, there isn’t a curve on the car - and it’s all the better for it.
The rugged intent is matched by its go anywhere, take on anything reality. The Jeep really is a serious alternative to the other family cars on the road. At £15,000 ($30,000) the price tag doesn’t put you off either. Perhaps crucially though, it really is a small 4 x 4 and as a result, the usual off road vehicle haters let you slip by unnoticed.
In summary the Jeep Patriot makes you feel like the manliest man ever, whilst gently wrapping its protective arms around your family. It may have the 4 x 4 proportions of a matchbox toy, but this is one car that wants to be taken out of the box and pushed around the floor until the pile is worn out.

Police – More Than a Just a Name
March 11, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
When people mention the word police, most think of the law enforcement agency in the UK. However, police has also developed into a brand in its own right, selling jewellery and accessories across the globe.
The Police brand has a broad selection of items including sunglasses, jewellery, watches, timepieces and fragrances. Most noteworthy of these items are the sunglasses as they marked the birth of the brand. This occurred when Police decided to recruit Hollywood favourite Antonio Banderas as their new ambassador for the brand. The heart-throbbing and well respected leading Hollywood actor joined the brand due to his bold personality, his strong passion with his work and his high level of status all of which are supposed to complement the brands own image.
Banderas himself came from Roman Catholic family and developed good values, especially from his father who was a policeman in the Guardia Civil, which in English means a military body of police. This was another reason why Banderos was such a good candidate for the Police brand.
The Police brand has also been associated with other leading Hollywood actors such as Bruce Willis and George Clooney who have both decided that they were going to keep the sun out their eyes with the Police sunglasses. David Beckham was another high profile superstar who similarly decided that the brand complemented his first class football.
Police are now a global brand and are active in many countries across the globe. They operate in Switzerland and Hong Kong and are one of the leading manufacturers for sunglasses, whilst also selling wristwatches and fashion jewellery. Amongst some of the wristwatches sold, black leather strap watches are becoming popular as many leading high street stores for example H Samuel http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/link/category/watches/brand/police are of the understanding that these will take off in the near future.
Whatever the future holds, the Police brand is one that will continue to grow if it maintains its reputation as one that stays in touch with the latest trends in society and high image status. Twenty years on, and Police is still growing strong.

Willie Nelson Selects Rhino for His Newest Biodeisal Center
March 3, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
CARLS CORNER, TX. – Willie Nelson announced his latest fuel center that brings cleaner burning fuel to the public – this time to a retail station in Carls Corner. Rhino Steel Building Systems was selected to provide the steel building materials- pre-engineered for the specific needs of the new center. The new building is 134? x 98? with a rustic wood facade. Biodiesel, a diesel fuel substitute made from soybean oil and other natural fats and vegetable oils, works in any diesel vehicle. It can be used in pure form or blended with petroleum diesel. The most common blend is B20, a mixture of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent diesel.
Biodiesel fuel can reduce dependency upon foreign oil. This can help struggling Texas farmers find new uses for their crops. According to the Department of Energy, Biodiesel has become America’s fastest growing alternative fuel . Biodiesel and biodiesel blends reduce emissions while offering similar performance to petroleum diesel.
Bruce Brown, president of Rhino, stated that “I’m very happy to have Mr. Nelson join our family of customers and hope to be of help in the future for any building needs and also be a small part of this important trend in energy conservation.”
Rhino Steel Building Systems is organized in two division, the Steel Buildings division and Steel frame homes division. Steel buildings can include virtually any type of building application imaginable, such as steel barns, steel garages, horse barn designs, small or giant manufacturing plants, modular industrial office, steel gymnasiums, churches, metal storage buildings, office buildings, horse arenas, aircraft hangars, auto repair buildings and many more. A Rhino metal building is specifically designed to meet wind and snow load requirements for the buyer’s specific area of the country as well as other requirements related to the performance of the structure. Rhino does not sell an arch steel building. Rhino’s steel frame home division sells a unique “panelized” framing kit, including walls, trusses and all other framing materials and fasteners necessary to complete the basic framing system. Here again, Rhino’s all steel homes are not prefab homes but steel frame buildings specifically designed for a wide variety of family needs in varying environments. Also, pre-fab homes do not have the modern architecture that typify rhino all steel homes.

Plastic Guns–the Threat That Never Existed
December 17, 2007 by Shadow · Comments Off
In the early 1980’s, the Austrian government was looking for a new standard issue pistol for the country’s armed forces. Requirements for the new pistol included ease of use, light weight, accuracy, and reliability.
Glock had been producing equipment for the Austrian army for decades, but had never been in the business of making firearms. At the urging of members of the Austrian military, Glock began research and development on a pistol that would meet the military’s needs.
The result was the Glock 17, a 9 millimeter pistol that utilized new polymer technology for non-stress-bearing parts such as the grip frame. Lightweight and extremely reliable, the Glock 17 was quickly adopted by military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.
The new pistol also caught the attention of the media, Hollywood and, of course, anti-gun groups. Despite the fact that 86% of the pistol was made from hardened steel, Glock pistols were inaccurately described as being undetectable by airport x-ray screening. For example, in the movie “Die Hard 2,” Lieutenant John McClane (played by Bruce Willis) makes a comment about the Glock being invisible to airport screening devices.
True to form, politicians in Washington seized upon the media hype, and legislation was drafted in 1988 that would ban “plastic guns” that could evade airport screening devices. Despite the fact that no such gun existed then, or will exist in the foreseeable future, congress enacted a ban. Vice President Dick Cheney, then a congressman from Wyoming, was one of only three members of congress who refused to ban a gun that didn’t exist.
What does this “ancient history” have to do with 2008? Apparently plenty, at least with regard to the United States Supreme Court. During opening arguments in Heller vs. the District of Columbia on March 18 2008, justices and attorneys were keen on whether an individual right to bear arms would allow “plastic guns” that could go undetected by airport screening equipment.
One would think that such learned men would be above the hype, but apparently the ability to discern Hollywood from the real world is not a prerequisite for graduating from law school.
When congressmen, senators and Supreme Court justices base their decisions upon what is depicted in the movies, it’s readily apparent why our country is headed in a downward spiral.
What’s next to be banned? “Plastic cars” that can evade police radar scanners?
Create a video blog…instantly.

Super Women Unravelled

I can bring home the bacon
I can fry it up in a pan
And never ever let you forget the romance
Cause I’m a woman.
As a young woman growing up in the 1970s, those words were the anthem of the liberated woman. They embodied the ideal that women could have it all: a career, a family and better sex than her mother. A quarter of a century later, myself and many other women in their 40s have found these words daunting and the reality of trying to have it all tiring and overwhelming.
Often in those ensuing twenty-five years, we have faced situations that have forced us to choose: career or family. As the increasing rate of infertility has shown, women have delayed motherhood in favour of careers often to the point that motherhood is no longer a viable option. Many face the dilemma of expensive medical interventions or abandoning the dream of a carrying a child inside their own bodies in favour of carrying an adopted child in their hearts. Equally perplexing is the plight of the women who have opted for motherhood in their 20s only to face discrimination when they attempt to re-enter the work force once their children are in school.
I recently watched a compelling pilot for a new US television show, The Lipstick Jungle. Based on a book by Candace Bushnell and starring Brooke Shields, it follows the lives of three women in their 40s who appear to be living this Enjoli dream. In reality, their lives are falling apart. Shield’s character is facing divorce because her stay-at-home husband feels emasculated by her higher income. Another character begins an affair with a younger man when her husband is more interested in his academic career than her. She stands naked with her lover’s number written in ink on her leg without his noticing. The third is trying to balance her desir
