Why is Prius the Much-loved Toyota?
May 30, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
Why is the Toyota Prius much-loved? One answer may be that Prius shoppers want everyone to know that they are driving a hybrid. But there are numerous reasons to add to the list.
Only a third of Prius owners cited that reason just three years ago, according to CNW, which tracks auto shopping trends. “I really want people to know that I care about the environment,” said Joy Feasley of Philadelphia, the owner of a green 2006 Prius. “I like that people stop and ask me how I like my car.” Dan Becker, the head of the global warming program at the Sierra Club added, “The Prius allowed you to make a green statement with a car for the first time ever.”
This spring, over half of the Prius owners surveyed by CNW Marketing Research of Bandon, Ore., said that the main reason they bought their car was that it makes a statement about them.
Mary Gatch of Charleston, S.C., picked the car over a hybrid version of the Toyota Camry after trading in a Lexus sedan. “I felt like the Camry Hybrid was too subtle for the message I wanted to put out there,” Gatch said. “I wanted to have the biggest impact that I could, and the Prius puts out a clearer message.”
Unlike the original Prius buyers, who wanted to be first with its innovative technology, the latest owners are far more conscious of foreign oil dependence and global warming, said Doug Coleman, Toyota’s product manager for Prius. “Consumer knowledge and consumer awareness is changing,” Coleman said.
Prius sales for the first six months of the year increased 93.7 percent from last year, to 94,503, and the Japanese automaker has already sold close to as many Prius cars as it did in all of 2006.
The Toyota Prius was first embraced by famous celebrities and remains in trend long after most cars have lost their hum. Owners have included Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Billy Joel, and Larry David. David has bought three, including one for his role in the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Now Prius drivers are typically found in cities on the East and West Coasts, and in college towns like Ann Arbor, Mich., and State College, Pa. “You can’t drive across town without seeing half a dozen of them,” said Peter Darnell, a software engineer and Prius owner in Westford, Mass., north of Boston. Darnell admits to feeling smug this year when gasoline prices spiked above $3 a gallon. But that was not the main reason he purchased a Prius. “I have to admit that I’m a granola-crunching liberal, and I really liked the idea of minimizing the impact on the environment,” Darnell said.
Corey Confer, the general sales manager at Joel Confer Toyota in State College, said that he had received calls from as far away as Key West, Fla., from buyers looking for a Prius. His dealership advertises an $800 discount on each vehicle. A number of dealers in the West are adding $2,000 premiums.
Nationwide, Prius sales increased dramatically in May, when gasoline prices rose over $3 a gallon. Worldwide, Toyota has sold over one million Prius cars. Toyota was alarmed to see Prius sales even out last year. But before gas prices hit record levels, Prius sales were climbing again.
Toyota executives have said that they plan to offer a hybrid version of everything the company sells worldwide, perhaps as soon as 2010. That fact could make a fanatic forget about the most fascinating Volkswagen Touareg part. Japanese press reports said that the Japanese automaker may even build Prius into a separate brand, with basic and sporty Prius models.

How to improve your English reading skills by Louisa Walsh
To improve your English, we recommend you practice all the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening in English. In this article we will focus on improving your reading skills in English.
Practicing reading in English will help improve your understanding of English, knowledge of English vocabulary/phrases and understanding of English grammar.
Reading does not need to be boring. Below we look at ways of improving your reading skills in English - and we link to some top websites so you have instant access to authentic and interesting English reading material.
If your English is already a good level, try newspapers. Popular ‘quality’ UK newspapers have online sites:
The Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/
The independent: http://www.independent.co.uk/
The Times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/uk/
Newspaper articles are sometime difficult because they often use slang, idiom or specific cultural expressions which will be difficult for a low level learner to understand. For example, a couple of recent newspaper stories began: ‘How Leonardo DiCaprio scored big with Scorsese’(was immediately popular with) and ‘Iraq policy has lead to Blair’s downfall’ (decline in power, popularity or status.)
If modern short stories are more ‘your bag’ (your preference)I like this site: http://talesetc.com/copyrights.htm The stories are short so they are suitable for reading on the Internet and easy to understand. You should find a theme to interest you.
Are you interested in English culture/traditions/food? Then visit http://www.woodlandsjunior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/index.html. I love this site. It is written for children and so the language is very simple but it is very comprehensive, covering all aspects of daily life in England. There is a great section on typical English food. If you are feeling very brave, why not try one of the recipe ideas following the instructions in English
http://www.woodlandsjunior.kent.sch.uk/customs/questions/food/index.htm
But what if you don’t like reading stories, are not interested in English culture or you find English newspapers on the Internet boring or too difficult? Then don’t read them! You will learn more if you read about something that interests you. Whether you like sports, film reviews or gardening, there will be a site on the Internet for you, so read about your particular pastime on the Internet in English, rather than in your own language.
Top tips to improve your English reading skills:
As mentioned, choose a theme/website/book that interests you.
Practice reading in English regularly; at least once or twice a week.
Be confident! You don’t have to understand every word to understand the general meaning. Try reading a text once through first to get a ’sense’ of the meaning. This can be more important than understanding every single word.
Keep a dictionary with you while you read. Advanced learners, try this online dictionary: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/ Get into the habit of looking up phrases that are difficult while you are reading. Doing it afterwards might mean you forget the context.
Are you having to look in your dictionary for every second word? Then the text you have chosen is too difficult for you. Choose something else - not too easy, though. It is good to have a bit of a challenge.
Happy reading! Visit www.phone-english.net for more information on how you can improve your spoken English with 1-1 lessons by phone.

An Interview With Michael Mehas, Author, Film Maker, And Lawyer, About Stolen Boy
March 21, 2008 by Shadow · Comments Off
Stolen Boy is a work of fiction, but based on the Jessie James Hollywood case … what author Michael Mehas says may make the difference between Hollywood’s life and death.
Stolen Boy is powerful stuff. How did you get interested in it?
One day in April of 2003, while I was tending to my dying dog, Sadie, I got a call from an old buddy, Nick Cassavetes, who said he wanted to make a film about Jesse James Hollywood, the youngest man ever on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. Since I lived so close to Santa Barbara, where the crime took place, I had read all these articles about this amazing crime involving all these young kids. Kids accused of committing crimes against kids. It was an unbelievable story. One I wanted to know more about.
For anyone who doesn’t know what it’s like to work on a Cassavetes film, it’s one of those rare opportunities in life that you just don’t want to turn down. Making a Cassavetes movie is not so much about fame or fortune as it is about experiencing a piece of life. And that was one piece of life that I just didn’t want to miss. So about a week later, after Sadie had moved on, I asked Nick where I could sign up. He set up a meeting with the Santa Barbara District Attorney, and the rest is just sort of history, as they say. The whole thing took on this life of its own - taking all these unbelievably crazy turns before becoming the movie (Alpha Dog), my book, and then the craziness of my legal involvement with the death penalty case.
It certainly is unusual for a ‘casual’ outside observer to become part of a trial, yet you have been subpoenaed twice to appear in court. What are your thoughts?
Actually, I’ve been subpoenaed three times in Jesse Hollywood’s case. So far, I’ve testified twice and suffered the misfortune of having the court order me to turn over all the notes and tapes from my interviews. Early on in the process, I twice faced the very real prospect of going to jail for not complying with the subpoenas, which at first I had seriously considered doing.
In the beginning, after Hollywood got captured in Brazil - after one of the greatest global manhunts in history - my life got turned totally upside down. I met with Hollywood’s famed trial attorney, James Blatt, several times, and he asked me to testify in the case. He wanted me to help him save his client’s life.
While Hollywood had been on the lam, the Santa Barbara County District Attorney, and other law enforcement agencies, had totally demonized him through the media. They had basically tried and convicted him in absentia. As a result, the public sentiment was seriously against Hollywood. People wanted to see him die a violent death for a crime he hadn’t even yet appeared in court for. The prosecutor wanted to put him to death. The victim’s family sought a ten-eyes-for-two kind of justice. I truly believed Mr. Blatt’s client stood very little chance of getting a fair trial. I think, at the time, any jury would have handed down a swift conviction followed by an even swifter justice - that being the death sentence.
I’m a criminal defense attorney by heart and by trade. I’m also a humanist. And I sincerely believe that all living things have this inherent right to life. It’s not our job to make the ultimate decision about each other. I’m not a fan of government-sanctioned murder. So I wanted to do whatever I could to help save Mr. Blatt’s client.
Besides, I knew Jesse Hollywood’s family. Jesse had a little brother that he was very protective of. He had parents who loved their son. They didn’t want him to die. And neither did I. But the problem with Mr. Blatt’s request was that if I ended up testifying, my testimony could be used as the cornerstone for criminal prosecution against Ron Zonen, the prosecutor on the case - and also his office - for potential illegal misconduct in their dealings with me. I got a lot of information from the prosecutor. A lot of it - he probably shouldn’t have given to me. It wasn’t until the California Attorney General decided not to prosecute him or his office that I finally agreed to testify. And then when I did, the court ordered me to turn over my notes. If I didn’t comply, I’d go to jail. So, ultimately, I complied. I wasn’t really that interested in staying at the Gray Bar Hotel. I had a life to live. I had a book to finish. So I turned the notes and tapes over. But I wasn’t really happy about the way the situation had materialized at all.
Maybe I have it wrong, but when I compare your writings about the fictional Mickey with those of Jesse James Hollywood I see a divergence. Mickey is the devil incarnate, yet I get a real sense that your feelings for Jesse are something else. Am I right?
The real Jesse James Hollywood is far from the devil incarnate. He’s actually a very smart kid. When you think about it, he was very successful at what he did. But Jesse wasn’t evil. He was an arrogant hothead, maybe. And he was scared, definitely. He was living in some pretty rough company at the time. But through all this, Jesse James Hollywood-in spite of the reputation his name assumes - is a human being. And at the time he did whatever it was that he really did do, he was just a kid. He was a twenty-year-old kid trying to play the big man’s game, and it got away from him. But he, just like his co-defendants, doesn’t deserve to die as a result of it. If he does get the death penalty, and if we, as the state of California, agree to put him to death, what does that make us? People who kill to avenge a killing? Is that really what being a member of the human race is all about? Taking justice into our own hands? I know that’s not what I’m about. I believe in life, and I try not to put my energies toward creating death. So I will do whatever I can to help someone who’s in serious trouble. To help raise the consciousness of anyone who cares. To try to change the world around us by dedicating our collective-consciousness to life-enhancing measures, not death.
Are you still involved with the case? You clearly have formed a bond with Jesse’s father.
These are two very different issues. First of all, yes, I am still involved in the case in that I suspect the prosecutor and defense attorney are not finished with my services yet. The new prosecutor on the case has tried to subpoena me. From what I understand, he’s a really nice guy. But he wants to get more information from me, and I think that’s totally uncool. What could I possibly know or have at this point that he could possibly need? He’s trying to kill Jesse Hollywood. And I’m not going to help him do it, even if it does put me at risk of going to jail. It’s that simple. That’s why I sent my lawyer into court this past June, and the mouthpieces argued about the subpoena. The judge, in his wisdom, told the prosecutor and my attorney that he wouldn’t decide the issue of the validity of the subpoena until the case came back down from the California Supreme Court.
The Supremes are set to decide a very important issue in this case. As I understand it, they are dealing with how prosecutors should or should not be able to cozy up to the media while trying high-profile cases. It’s similar to the whole debacle with the Duke lacrosse team. The District Attorney on that case basically tried and convicted those poor kids through the media before they ever had a chance to defend themselves. The same thing happened here. The prosecutor wants Jesse James Hollywood on death row. I’m going to do what I can to help make sure that doesn’t happen. We have to change things around here. I believe that if we put our energies into life-enhancing measures we will all benefit as a whole. We are all related, you know. We all benefit when the rest of us do well. We need to stop killing our brothers. And it’s certainly not the job of our government to do that for us.
As far as Jesse’s father, Jack, is concerned. I could totally empathize with the guy. Here’s a man who felt terrible about his involvement in raising his son. His son was looking to be put to death, and this guy somehow felt responsible for that. Jack told me a story about the time law enforcement agencies raided his house and served a search warrant on him not long after Jesse disappeared. One of the law officers, a supervisor from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, told Jack that he hoped to be the one to find Jesse, because he wanted to be the one to shoot and kill him. Can you imagine someone telling you that about your kid? Jack was devastated. He didn’t want his son to be murdered by a member of the Sheriff’s department. At the time, I think all he really wanted was to be able to hold his son in his arms and know that he was going to be all right.
Usually the sequence of events is book first, movie later. In this case you reversed the order. Looking at both works, which is your favorite, and what are your thoughts about this sequence?
I loved the movie. I thought Nick (Cassavetes) did an exceptional job with it. It was raw. Some of the performances were raw. It was a truly unusual blend of pure, hot-looking energy that told a very compelling story, an important story, one that needed to be told. The book tells roughly the same story, but in a completely different way. And I’ll tell you why.
Back in October of 2003, Nick had a reading of the project that influenced me tremendously when it came to which version of the story to tell through the book. There was so much to this story. So much information. There were so many people involved. It was difficult to decide exactly which storylines to follow. When we started out on the project, we wanted to tell as truthful a version of the story as we possibly could. That’s why Nick hired me. He knew I’d figure out a way to get the information that we needed. So Cassavetes had this reading with many of Hollywood’s top young talent. Great young actors and actresses. This was back with the first draft of Nick’s screenplay, when Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey McGuire were set to produce it. Tobey read Hollywood’s part while Leo read the part of his chief antagonist, the victim’s brother. As the reading progressed deep into the screenplay, you could feel the excitement building. The room filled with tension. And as we neared the climax, you could literally feel the anxiety intensify within the actors. It was like - No way, this isn’t going to happen. They’re really not going to do this. There’s no way these guys are going to hurt this kid. And then, all of a sudden, the room went dead silent. This huge collective gasp escaped. It was like a huge ball had burst. Everybody fell back, totally deflated. They couldn’t believe it could happen like that. It was like - There’s no way these guys, who had spent all this time partying with this kid, would… And then suddenly they commit the worst act you could possibly imagine. The actors were devastated. And I knew that’s how my story had to end.

Polo Beats Prius’ Green Factor
December 28, 2007 by Shadow · Comments Off
A diesel car has beaten the world’s hot-selling hybrid – Toyota Prius – to the top spot in a new government guide to greener motoring, reported Alastair Dalton, a transport correspondent at Scotsman.
The new Volkswagen Polo, which will be rolled out in Britain this October, emits just 99 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, five grams fewer than the petrol-electric hybrid, Prius. The Prius has become synonymous with environmentally minded celebrities, such as Jennifer Aniston and Leonardo DiCaprio. But the new Polo Blue Motion could prove even greener.
The Prius, the first hybrid to be mass-produced, has won a number of awards including the Year Japan from 1997 to 1998, the North American Car of the Year in 2004, and the European Car of the Year in 2005. EPA has rated the hybrid at 48 mpg in city driving and 45 mpg on the highway. By far, it is the most economical car sold in the United States.
The Toyota Motor Corp.’s third generation Hybrid Synergy Drive is expected to slash costs and weight. Additionally, a plug-in version of the hybrid will be engineered to tout increased gas mileage with larger engine. It has also been suggested that a range of different sized models are planned, rather than a single model. The first of these new models is set to be introduced in 2009. This new Prius may carry the Lexus brand.
Diesel cars top the government’s new ‘Act on’ list, with officials advising motorists who drive predominantly outside towns and cities to choose them over gasoline cars. The number of diesel cars on Britain’s roads has nearly tripled over the last ten years to 6.1 million in 2006. Now they account for 22 percent of cars.
“The Polo Blue Motion 1.4 TDI 80PS, which includes a diesel particulate filter system, is among the first conventional-engine cars to be exempt from road tax because of its low emissions,” Dalton reported. “The Prius is joint runner-up in the tables with the diesel Mini Cooper D hatchback, which also has a particulate filter and will be available next month.” There must be something about the Volkswagen Radiator Hose? Or is it the package?
The government rankings, compiled with What Car? magazine, feature the ten lowest emission vehicles in 14 categories - from superminis to luxury cars. The rankings use the government’s Vehicle Certification Agency’s emissions data. The agency is responsible for conducting the official tests to determine the emissions from cars.
Stuart Hay, the head of policy at Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: “Unfortunately, no account is taken of other local air pollutants that come from diesel cars, so the public might not necessarily be buying the most environmentally friendly car overall.”
“If most of your driving is in cities, diesel cars might not be as good for the environment as you might think. Particulates and NOX increase lung cancer and cardiac diseases, and make existing conditions, like asthma, worse,” said Ed Dearnley, a policy officer with the National Society for Clean Air and Environmental Protection.
Jim Fitzpatrick, a UK transport minister who is due to launch the list today, said: “By choosing the car with the most fuel-efficient engine in its class, drivers could reduce their engine emissions by 24 per cent and potentially save a quarter on fuel costs. The car you choose can help reduce your impact on the environment, and save money.”
Steve Fowler, editor of What Car?, has this to say: “These rankings are exactly what consumers need to make an informed choice about the car to buy to minimize fuel consumption, save money and help tackle climate change.”

Leonardo DiCaprio and His Movies
December 4, 2007 by Shadow · Comments Off
Dad, I really want to become an actor, but if this is what it’s all about, I don’t want to do it.
-Leonardo DiCaprio
Few stars can match the diversity of Leonardo DiCaprio. Starting from the youthful TV shows to achieving superstar status, he is in a place only a few actors in Hollywood can claim to be. Best of all he is part of a few young stars who have successfully steered their way out of the pop bubble and into serious roles earning him accolades from critics and fans alike.
Leo is the only child of a comic book distributor, George DiCaprio and a legal secretary, Irmelin Indenbirken. He was born on November 11, 1974. His first name was taken from the artist Leonardo da Vinci after her pregnant mother first felt his kick while in front of a painting of the famous artist. His childhood was characterized by living in various neighborhoods with his mother and having to be visited by his father (at the time his parents were divorced).
He started his interest in acting when his stepbrother started being seen in television commercials. At the age of twelve he already set out too finding agents but were most of times turned down.
He got his first role in the TV movie Parenthood. It was also in this movie production that he met his best friend Tobey Maguire. He would later take on various roles on other TV shows. One notable movie he had done at that time was This Boy’s Life, which starred Robert de Niro. It was considered a breakthrough performance for the young actor and would be followed by What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
His role opposite Claire Danes in the revisiting of Romeo + Juliet gave him a lot of young fans but his next movie earned him the status that he is enjoying now. James Cameron’s Titanic was an ambitious film in all aspects. The recreation of the events surrounding of the demise the ship was told in the perspective of two fictional lovers Jack Dawson (played by Leo) and Rose (Kate Winslet). The tragedy of the ship and the love story propelled the film to become the highest grossing movie in the world and launched Leonardo as a young superstar.
He then decided to work with seasoned directors to move away from superstar image. He has worked with Steven Spielberg with Catch Me If You Can. He has also worked with Martin Scorsese with a lot of projects. First he played an avenging son in the period film Gangs of New York. They would then team up again on another period flick, The Aviator. In the movie he portrays the Multi-Millionaire Howard Hughes. His portrayal of the eccentricities of the aviation magnate earned him a Best Actor nomination in the Oscars.
In 2006, Leo would appear in two movies where he would play roles of characters with questionable allegiance. First Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, a remake of the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Here Leonardo plays an undercover cop sent to observe a Boston mob boss (Jack Nicholson) while hiding his identity from a mole posing as a cop (Matt Damon). This film earned Scorsese his first Oscar for Best Directing.
Leo’s next movie in 2006 beat his role in The Departed to a nomination in the Oscars. In Blood Diamond he plays a South African trying to smuggle diamond out the country. This was also the two roles that earned a double nomination in the Golden Globe Awards. This is testament of how Leonardo DiCaprio has changed himself from an actor to a star.

Diamond Rings are Beautiful
November 19, 2007 by Shadow · Comments Off
Diamonds are sold across the world and are bought for many reasons. If Fred for example was given one as a present he would be an extremely lucky man. However, diamonds are very very expensive and the likelihood of gaining one would generally be for more romantic purposes. Diamonds are traditionally given as a symbol of love in the form of a ring, either for an engagement or a wedding. Diamond rings are considered to be one of the most beautiful gifts one can get.
Sold in different shapes and sizes, diamond rings can be found at pretty much any high street store operating in the jewellery business including http://www.hsamuel.co.uk/webstore/link/category/rings/stone+type/diamond which has a particularly good selection. Although sold in various forms, nearly 80% of diamonds are sold as a round stones. But whether they are round, oval or even square, diamond rings are absolutely stunning and maintain their supremacy. This is because firstly, no matter what the economic climate, diamond rings always maintain their value. Secondly, its beauty is so pure that its value continues. And thirdly, diamonds are one of the hardest substances in the world and therefore are all but impossible to damage or break.
Diamond Ringss
Diamonds originate from various countries around the world. The majority of them are situated in Africa (they include South Africa, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast) and have caused many arguments resulting in national conflicts. This was depicted in the film Blood diamond featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou. Diamonds can also be found in South America and parts of the Far East including China and India. These precious stones are then exported out of these countries and delivered to four major cutting centres around the world; Antwerp, Tel Aviv, New York and Bombay. It is here that the diamonds are then cut and turned into products that can be sold in various international markets all over the world.
